We are excited to announce that we have teamed up with Donna Mitroff and Nina Rappaport-Rowan on a documentary film about Zona Roberts—a project they have been passionately working on for the past several years. Below is a description of the film project:
Zona Roberts was a mother in 1953 when the polio epidemic struck her small California community, infected Ed, her 14 year old son, sent him to the hospital for 2 years until she brought him home a quadriplegic requiring an iron lung to keep him alive and from that day forward, he watched and learned as she battled endless bureaucracies to ensure that he would have every opportunity that his high intelligence warranted. Learn he did, and went on to establish the first significant movement for independent living and disability rights where she worked with and beside him. The film tells Zona’s own amazing story and takes the audience through the history of the Independent Living movement as she both observed, participated and advanced it to become the “Grandmother” of the movement.
As we continue to honor Zona’s inspiring life, we invite you to help us further our efforts. Your generous donations will support this documentary project as it comes together.
